Echium vulgare

Also known as Blueweed, this biennial/ sometimes perennial medicinal plant is related to borage and having many of the same medicinal qualities. Traditionally also used to treat snakebites and to promote healing and expel toxins. The leaves are rather hairy, sometimes even prickly, and can cause dermatological sensitivity in some people. However, the young leaves if finely chopped can be used as a spinach substitute either raw or cooked. The root can also be used to produce a red dye. The flowers start pinkish and open to blue with pink stamens, and are adored by bees and butterflies. Suited to most soils but prefers slightly dry and poorer soils, and open sunny sites.

Height to 90cm.

Medical disclaimer

Jo has a passion for growing herbs but is not a qualified herbalist and has no medical background.

We are lucky to have Patricia Beagle working here at times, who is qualified, and some of her advice does appear on these pages, but herbs act differently for different people and can interact with other medicines. We therefore always recommend that you consult with your own qualified health-care practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing or on any medications.
