The New Perennial Movement is a naturalistic style of gardening that has evolved since the 1990s, based on the work of Noel Kingsbury, Roy Diblik, Piet Oudolf and others. It is a low-maintenance concept based on grasses, perennials and bulbs which intermingle to give the feel of a prairie or wildflower meadow. It celebrates the ephemeral qualities of plants and showcases seasonal changes, emphasising not just spring and summer flowers but also stalks and seedheads in autumn and winter. The key to the success of these gardens is to select plants suited to the local soil and climate, so be aware that not all those listed here will necessarily suit your own spot. And we don’t sell any grasses or bulbs so you’ll need to source those elsewhere. But once you’ve got the right blend the rest is easy – this naturalistic look is all about working with nature and letting the plants look after themselves!
