Mint Water Mint

Mentha aquatica

$8.50

Native to native to much of Europe, northwest Africa and southwest Asia, this is one of the most water loving of the mints. It is found naturally at the margins of running water such as streams and rivers (where the leaves float on the surface), as well as in damp, boggy spots such as ditches and low lying meadows. The leaves are smooth and round with a strong aroma and flavour, which is not to everyone’s taste.  The flowers are pale purply-pink, short and tightly packed, and attractive to beneficial insects.

As well as the ability to spread rapidly on rhizomes like other mints, this species is also a rampant hybridiser, crossing with Spearmint to produce Peppermint, with Apple Mint to form Mentha × suavis; with Corn Mint to produce Mentha × verticillata; and with both M. arvensis and M. spicata to give the tri-species hybrid Mentha × smithiana. The cultivated ‘Eau de Cologne’ mint is considered to be a variety of this Water Mint.

Cultivation

Requires rich, moist soil or standing or shallow running water. Full sun or part shade. Keep it confined to a pot if you don’t want it to spread (with a saucer under the pot to retain water).

Uses

A perfect plant for filling an awkward boggy spot, for pond edges and water gardens. Great for attracting bees, butterflies, hoverflies and fellow beneficials to these areas! The leaves can be used in salads, teas etc just like other mints but have quite a pungent flavour. Water mint can also be used to purify water, so can be used as part of grey-water/reed bed treatment systems. Clearly the leaves should not be eaten if the plants are used for this purpose.

Medicinal Uses

Water Mint contains many beneficial medicinal compounds and anti-pathogenic properties. It is antibacterial (including against E coli) and also said to be effective against yeast infections such as Candida albicans, and the Giardia parasite. All Mentha species are rich in antioxidants, Vitamin A and E. Leaves can be crushed for use on insect bites, and made into a tea for headaches and nausea.
